Grandmaster Eddie Wu made his annual visit to the Ann Arbor Academy on the weekend of September 8th and 9th. He was accompanied by his disciple, senior student Paul Dempsey. Saturday afternoon he held a beginner's workshop. This workshop included students learning either the 108 or 54 form. He went over the tai chi walking, the warm-up exercises, and some parts of the 108 form including Cloud Hands. Everyone said they worked hard, learned a great deal, and really enjoyed themselves. Beginners who were intimidated at the idea of studying with the Grandmaster of all of Wu Style tai chi chuan were delighted to find out how accessible he is, and how he makes everyone laugh even while they're training intensively!
Saturday evening, a number of students went to dinner with Grandmaster Wu and Sifu Genie. The dinner at Great Lake Chinese Restaurant was a banquet; an array of wonderful Hong Kong-style dishes were enjoyed by everyone present.
Sunday, Grandmaster Wu worked with Sifu Genie's disciples in the morning. The afternoon was dedicated to teaching the intermediate and advanced students. This workshop was for students who had finished either the 108 or 54 form and started pushing hands. As with the beginners' workshop, students from all of Sifu Genie's classes attended. At this session, the focus was on fine-tuning the movements of the Standard 108 form. A discussion of applications of parts of the form helped explain the positions and their correct implementation. Balance training and rooting, as well as gaining an understanding of stickiness, rounded out the afternoon.
Everyone now has a lot to work on! Sifu Genie's students are grateful to the Grandmaster and Paul for visiting, and to Sifu for preparing us so well for these workshops. Next year, a tai chi retreat in Toronto is planned and it is hoped that many of us can attend to continue working with Grandmaster Wu.

First Sunday Workshops |

On Sunday, September 10 students from both beginning and advanced classes gathered for Sifu Genie's workshop on the changes to the Standard 108 Form. Most had been to the workshops this summer when Grandmaster Wu had introduced the changes to standardize the form around the world; this workshop was a chance to re-learn and practice the changes in depth.
This was the first in a series of workshops to re-work the 108 form. Sifu went over the changes through the first Cloud Hands during this one. Now we hope we can remember them while doing the form!
Requests from several students have lead to a change in plans. Instead of workshops every other month, we'll continue this series to rework the 108 on the first Sunday of every month until it's done. You can join at any time and learn the changes being practiced for that section.
The workshops are from 1:00-3:00pm on the first Sundays for $20. The next one will be on October 1st.

Grandmaster Wu visited Ann Arbor the weekend of July 29-30 to conduct a series of workshops and preside over the discipleship ceremony when Sifu Genie took on six new disciples.
Grandmaster Wu was accompanied by his wife, Simo Winnie, and his two highest-ranking male and female disciples, Jonathan Krehm and Evonne Tan. We were very happy to host everyone, and were especially gratified to see how pleased everyone was with our school - its setting, and the level of training which Sifu Genie has given us.
Saturday's workshop was for beginners, defined as those not yet through the 108 Form. Student attended from almost all of Sifu Genie's various classes. Everyone enjoyed working with Grandmaster Wu, and all were amazed at how approachable he is, even while encouraging great efforts.
After the workshop the ceremony was conducted to welcome the new disciples and then everyone enjoyed a light potluck supper. Six students demonstrated the 54 Form and we were pleased that Grandmaster Wu encouraged us to come to Toronto to compete in the group form category at the next tournament. He repeatedly praised Sifu Genie for her excellent teaching!
On Sunday the workshop for intermediate/advanced students began at 1pm. During the next three hours, Grandmaster Wu took us through the entire 108 Form, teaching us all the new changes which have been documented on the DVD to promote a standardized form worldwide. There was great excitement, and everyone worked really hard. There is a lot to absorb! It will take us many months to incorporate all these changes in our form. Many folks felt that this was the best seminar Grandmaster Wu has conducted for us. We were very happy that his senior disciples joined him; we look forward to strengthening our ties with the Toronto academy. We are very honored and grateful that Grandmaster Wu devoted a whole weekend to our school , and look forward to more such visits in the future.

Workshop - Tai Chi and Daoist Philosophy |

The topic for this workshop was Tai Chi and Taoism. Sifu Genie arrived with the three essential Taoist texts: The I Ching or Book of Changes (Sifu recommends the translation by R. Wilhelm and C. F. Baynes, Princeton University Press), Tao Te Ching (R. Wilhelm’s translation recommended) and Chuang Tsu: Inner Chapters. She asked: “What does the word ‘Tao’ mean to you”. Most of the students gave responses ranging from the Tao being a way of living in the world in a nonconfrontational manner to the metaphor of the effect water has on a stone over time. Then Sifu read from the opening of Tao Te Ching: “The Tao that can be expressed is not the eternal Tao”. Had our recent efforts to express the Tao been in vain? How could we have a seminar on Tai Chi and the Tao if the latter cannot be expressed? We were confronted by a daunting opportunity.
A discussion developed around the idea that each one of us, one not more or less than the other, is the source of the universe. In fact, each fish in our aquarium is the source, as are the chairs in which we sit. How can the universe have so many sources, both animate and inanimate?
Sifu brought up the Yin Yang concept, emphasizing that it was impossible for anything to exist without its opposite: quietness is defined by noise, for example.
How does all this relate to Tai Chi? Sifu told a story of herself once asking a Chinese Tai Chi Master: “What is the relationship of Tai Chi to Taoism?” The Master looked perplexed. Several translations later came the reply: “Tai Chi is Taoism”.
We often hear that Tai Chi is a vast art form. Taoism must be similarly vast. In two hours of considering Tai Chi and Taoism the enormity and wonder of the art form were compounded by those of the philosophical school. Our awareness of the context in which we practice Tai Chi had expanded.
The seminar closed with a reading from the I Ching. The text depicted a river flowing into a reservoir and spoke of the volume of water relative to the available space in the reservoir. Our cups were full for that afternoon, our minds just short of overflowing.

Workshop - Rooting:Back to the Basics |

On February 12th, Sifu Genie taught a seminar on rooting. Open to all levels, the school was packed with eager students.
Everyone warmed up with a portion of the 108 Standard form. Sifu Genie then discussed several key principles that need to be practiced by all levels. These principles were applied to the walking, a seemingly simple task. This helped to bring more focus, and the results were apparent when practicing the first diagonal brush knee and push. Sifu Genie reminded us that this kind of focus must be kept while practicing.
After a short break, the beginners were introduced to push hands. Wu Style teaches twelve types, and the more advanced students demonstrated a few of them. Beginners then got a taste of basic push hands.
Next, Sifu Genie taught two meditations and discussed the importance of breathing and relaxation. The seminar closed with the fifty four competition form. Everyone left with a lot of information, key points to train, and things to think about.
The next seminar will occur in approximately two months. The topic and level are TBD. Check back often for more details.

Starting on Friday, January 20th Sifu Genie Parker will teach a class at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Ypsilanti. Open to the public, the class runs from 12:05 to 12:55pm. The address is:
Saint Joseph Mercy Health System
Women's Health Center
5320 Elliott Drive
Ypsilanti, MI 48197
The following is a description of the class:
Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as "meditation in motion". It is a form of martial art that originated in China over 1300 years ago and is an excellent form of fitness training often used for stress management as well as general health. The slow circular motions take every joint of your body through their full natural range of motion, developing flexibility and strength. The breathing techniques enhance lung capacity and stamina, while the circulatory system is opened, increasing blood flow throughout your body.
Control of both mind and body is essential so they may interact in harmony. In Wu style Tai Chi, the movements are simple to perform and yet demanding physically. Every muscle is gently trained to loosen and strengthen your entire body. By perfecting the movements, you learn coordination, balance, and relaxation, along with a noticeable increase in your power of concentration.
Students should attend class wearing loose-fitting, comfortable, modest clothing and shoes that have low or no heels. Be sure to eat something before training, and plan on drinking plenty of liquid.

Sifu Eddie Offers Workshops At The Ann Arbor Academy |

|
| Sifu Eddie Wu Kwong Yu came to the Ann Arbor Academy in late July for his annual visit to offer seminars and celebrate his birthday with us. Wu style practitioners of all levels and ages in our region participated in a pair of workshops. On July 23rd Sifu worked with beginners. More than fifteen beginning students attended. They came from a variety of classes in the southeastern Michigan area, and represented a wide array of experience in learning the form. Several expressed nervousness about working with Sifu Eddie; afterward, they agreed that he makes it a great deal of fun, as well as hard work! On July 24th, Sifu met with Sifu Genie's disciples for several hours. We were updated as the latest news of the Federation, and then worked mainly on form refinement. After this, Sifu held a workshop for intermediate and advanced students. Over twenty of Sifu Genie's students attended, from her classes both at Botsford Hospital and the Academy here. At this workshop, Sifu Eddie concentrated on power generation, applications and meditation, and a lot of hard work was put in. After the Sunday workshop, a potluck was held to celebrate Sifu Wu's birthday. He enjoyed Ann Arbor's finest deli's offereings, rounded out by many potluck items and a birthday cake provided by students. We are very grateful for Sifu's visit and teachings, and look forward to celebrating many more birthdays with him!
